WHY CARRYING YOUR BABY?
WHERE TO LEARN?
A baby worn in a wrap discovers
the world while nestled close to
their mother or father. This meets
your baby’s needs for closeness
and security while at the same time
allows you to get on with your daily
activities.
A worn baby develops a
special bond with the
person wearing him. Your baby is soothed by
being wrapped - your warmth, smell and sound
of your heartbeat remind your baby of being
back in the womb. Your baby feels safe and
secure and able
to discover the world around
him with confidence, providing an important
foundation for the rest of his life.
Whether on your front, hip or back, your baby is
in constant physical and visual contact with you,
which makes him feel content and secure. In
addition, being worn
stimulates all your baby’s
senses, especially his sense of equilibrium, as he
is rocked and swayed while you move.
Wraps, whether long or short, are a
valuable
tool for living with a newborn. They are very
versatile - you can do many different carries
with the one piece of fabric, and it doesn’t
matter what size you or your partner are, how
old your baby is, or how much support your
baby needs. Wraps can be used for carrying sick
children, and even in cases where either the
parent or child has a disability.
Because wearing your baby means you have
your hands free, you are able to easily include
your baby in your everyday life, sharing special
moments with him. Your wrap gives you that
‘‘second pair of hands’’ that most parents need.
You can get on with your regular activities, and
you can give your older children the attention
they want without having to leave your baby
to cry.
Wraps are a type of baby-carrier which allows
your baby to be carried in a
frog-legged or
squatting position that a baby naturally adopts,
with his spine perfectly supported from legs
to neck. In this position, your baby plays an
active part in being carried and will feel
lighter. The wrap envelops you and your baby’s
bodies, distributing your baby’s weight evenly.
This means you can carry a baby or other
child without hurting your back. The wrap
provides a close, supportive and balanced way
to carry your baby, thus freeing up your hands
completely.
Warning :
Although a perfectly tied and
tightened wrap will be comfortable, a sloppy
wrap job will quickly become uncomfortable.
Babywearing courses are available in some
areas/countries to help you choose the right
wrap size for you, and teach you how to
comfortably tie your wrap in different carries
which you can then practise with your baby.
