4. Check the endplay as follows:
a. Mount a dial indicator with the stem resting on the end of the shaft. Mark a spot adjacent to
the in dicator stem.
b. Use a hoist and fish scale to raise the shaft with 200 lbs. force.
c. Rotate the shaft two revolutions in each direction, stop on the spot, and zero the indicator.
d. Apply 200 lbs. downward pressure to the shaft and rotate it two times in each direction. Stop
with stem on the spot
e. The indicator reading is the endplay.
f. Tighten or loosen the bearing adjusting nut to obtain .004" - .008" endplay. Lift the shaft with
200 lbs. (plus the weight of the shaft) force between adjustments to seat the forward bearing
outer race against the retainer. Recheck endplay.
6. After adjusting endplay, lock or secure adjusting nut and grease bearings.
NOTE: After main bearings have been greased, operate the PTO at half speed for ten minutes.
Then wipe away discharged grease before starting normal operation.
Side Load Deflection
Side loads applied to PTO clutch shafts tend to deflect parts to which PTO's are mounted.
Excessive side loading can damage parts of the PTO and engine. Deflection must be checked
before operation of the PTO.
