scanner (OCR)
You can use your phone to scan words from printed
text and, using the Talking Dictionary, provide their
definitions and pronunciations as well. To scan a word:
1 Tap

OCR on the application launcher screen to
start the optical character recognition (OCR)
scanner.
2 Holding the camera at least 10 cm away from the
text, use the joystick
s
to adjust the brightness
and zoom.
3 Use the red border in the OCR viewfinder to
frame the selected word. When the word is
framed properly the framing border turns green,
and scanning occurs automatically.
After you scan a word, the OCR application
automatically starts the Talking Dictionary. Tap
Modify
to change the word that was scanned. Tap Detail for
the definition and pronunciation of the word.
Tap

, then tap Vertical text to change the orientation of
the scanning box from horizontal to vertical.
You can also manually enter a word into the scanner.
To see the information from the Talking Dictionary,
tap
é
, then tap Manual Entry . To view the list of
previously scanned words, tap
é
, then tap History .
talking dictionary
Talking dictionary contains definitions and synthesized
voice output for thousands of English and Chinese
words. The dictionary starts when you scan a word
using OCR (see page 88) and provides both Chinese
and English definitions for the scanned word.
