RUNNING-IN
Correct engine running-is essential to ensuring proper performance and durability.
Follow these recommendations:
•
Let the engine warm up to above 50° C (122° F); this is indicated by the blue light (1) on the instrument panel
going out.
•
During running-in, change speed.
0 - 20 Km (0 - 12 mi);
•
Do not exceed 5000 rpm. Do not keep the throttle open for more than 40%.
CAUTION
After 5 - 6 Km (3 - 3.7 mi), stop the vehicle and carry out an overall check of tightening torques and any
possible fluid leakage.
20 - 50 Km (12 - 31 mi);
•
Do not exceed 6000 rpm. Do not keep the throttle open for more than 50%.
50 - 80 Km (31 - 50 mi);
•
Do not exceed 7000 rpm. Do not keep the throttle open for more than 80%.
While it is important to put some stress on engine components during running-in, it is equally important to avoid
extreme load conditions.
WARNING
You may consider the running-in process complete only after covering 100 km (62 mi); after hitting this
mileage, the engine is ready to provide top performance.
CAUTION
It is recommended that the following operations be performed at the end of the running-in period:
- engine oil change;
- gearbox oil change;
- ensure that fasteners are at the correct torque, see 2.1.4 (TIGHTENING TORQUE SETTINGS).
Suspension, brakes and other chassis components also need to be broken in: vary your speed frequently during the
first 20 Km (12 mi) and use the brakes gently avoiding harsh, prolonged braking. This will help the brake pads bed in
properly against the brake discs.
