2.3 Troubleshooting
Spray pattern
condition
Problem
Solution
• One side of nozzle wing is clogged. • Soak nozzle in solvent to loosen.
• Loose air nozzle.
• Material around outside of air nozzle
has dried.
• Tighten air nozzle.
• Take off air nozzle and wipe off fluid tip,
using rag moistened with thinner.
• Atomization air pressure is set too
high.
• Trying to spray a thin material in too
wide pattern.
• Reduce air pressure.
• Increase material control by turning fluid
control screw to the left, while reducing
spray width by tuning spray with
adjustment screw to the right.
Spitting
• Packing around needle valve is dried
out.
• Fluid nozzle loosely installed or dirt
between nozzle and body.
• Loose or defective swivel nut on
siphon cup.
• Back up knurled nut, put a few drops of
machine oil on packing, re-tighten nut.
• Take off fluid nozzle, clean rear of
nozzle and soak in gun body. Replace
nozzle and bring it tight to body.
• Tighten or change out swivel nut.

carefully.
• Clean air cap.
• Clean.
• Lubricate.
Unable to get round spray.
• Fan adjustment screw not seating
properly.
• Clean or replace.
Will not spray.
• No air pressure at gun.
• Fluid pressure too low with internal
mix cup and pressure tank.
• Fluid control screw not open enough.
• Fluid too heavy for suction feed.
• Check air supply and air lines.
• Increase fluid pressure at tank.
• Open fluid control screw.
• Thin material or change to pressure feed.
Fluid leakage from packing
nut.
• Packing nut loose.
• Packing worn or dry.
• Tighten, but not so light as to grip
needle.
• Replace packing or lubricate.
Dropping from fluid tip.
• Dry packing.

• Gun held too far from surface.
• Atomization pressure set too high.
• Move gun closer to surface.
• Adjust atomization pressure.
Thick, dimpled finish
resembling orange peel.
