Making a back piece for face plate
Take a 1-inch piece of wood that is larger than the
diameter of the face plate. Screw the back piece to
the face plate using wood screws through the
holes in the face plate. Mount the face plate and
back piece in the drive spindle and carefully turn
the back piece until it is perfectly round and slightly
larger than the face plate.
Centre lathing
Only use a hollow chisel or similar to rough-turn
the workpiece into the required shape. Hold the
cutting tool firmly and steadily against the tool rest.
Use the hand that is holding the cutting tool handle
to raise or lower the machining point of the
workpiece, with the tool rest as a support point.
When the rough-turning is complete, a finer lathe
tool is used for final shaping and for decorative
grooving, etc.
Facing
Mount the face plate and the workpiece in the drive
spindle. Start by turning the workpiece on the
outside. Where possible, use the tailstock to
support the workpiece. Move the tailstock aside
when turning the inside of the workpiece. Be
careful to avoid the lathe tool getting stuck in the
workpiece, particularly when the interior is long
and narrow.
Extra accessory
You can purchase an emery cylinder for free-hand polishing, surface grinding disc or chuck as extra
accessories. These must be firmly mounted in the driving spindle.
Care of lathe tool
Grind the lathe tools after use with a whetstone. Be sure to maintain the lathe tools' original edge angle.
