Section 7 - Engine
Change antifreeze/coolant in the closed cooling system
For this you need to drain the entire closed cooling system on the engine are replace
with a new mix of 50% glycol (antifreeze) and 50% clean fresh water. The glycol should
be used even when operating in tropical climates as it has other beneficial effect such
as:
x
Increases cooling capacity. A mix of glycol and water cools better than just water
x
It lubricated the water pump and the thermostats on the engine.
x
It acts as a corrosion protection of the cooling passages.
Check operation of engine warning/alarm system
Step one is to test the panel light and audio alarm. When you turn the ignition key to on
but not start the engine they oil pressure alarm should go on. To check the temp alarm
locate the temp alarm sensor on the engine and ground the connector, this should make
the alarm go on.
Locate the two alarm sensors on the engine.
x
The temp warning sensor is located on the thermostat housing
x
The oil pressure is now located on the remote oil filter bracket but was previously
located on the rear port side of the engine block where the oil lines from the
remote oil filter fits to the engine block.
Step two would be to check that the sensors are operating correctly. If the panel light
and audio test performed ok then if you start the engine the oil pressure alarm should go
off, if so then this sensor is working properly.
To verify the function of the temperature alarm sensor is more complicated, the sensor
must be removed and boiled in water, you can then measure the temperature of the
water when the circuit in the sensor become closed, this should be at 102 degrees C.
Check electrical connections for corrosion
Corrosion is one of the main causes of electrical issues and all main connectors should
be checked for signs of corrosion.
Check operation of gauges and charging
Start the engine and verify that all gauges on the engine monitoring panel are operating
properly.
