Appendix A Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet
Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) is a specification for connecting multiple users
on an Ethernet to a remote site through common customer premise equipment (CPE).
PPPoE can be used to have users in an office or building share a common DSL (Digital
Subscriber Line) connection to the Internet. PPPoE combines the Point-to-Point Protocol
commonly used in dial-up connections with Ethernet protocol, which supports multiple users
in a local area network. The PPP Protocol information is encapsulated within an Ethernet
frame.
CellPipe 20A-USB supports PPPoE by using the LAN driver in conjunction with third-party
Ethernet software. The installation procedure is as follows:
1. Install CellPipe 20A-USB as a LAN (RFC1483) driver by following the steps detailed in
Chapter 3 CellPipe 20A-USB Software Setup, the section for Device driver software
installation.
2. Install the PPPoE software by following the steps detailed in the third-party software
supplier’s user’s guide. The third-party software will search for existing drivers. If multiple
drivers are installed, select CellPipe 20A-USB as the adapter of choice.
3. Internet connection will be made through the third-party software. You will be required to
enter your user name and password.
