Cost Control/Job Accounting:

While few dispute the potential benefits of
color -  increased information retention,
elevated professional image, better document
legibility, higher response rates, etc… a
question remains. At what price do I get these
new benefits.

With the explosion of digital camera sales and
internet access now readily available from the
desktop, buyers are very conscious of the
temptation by staff to print non-business
related items on office color devices (family
pictures, humorous images sent to personal
email accounts, etc.), running up business
costs and nullifying the advantages that color
was supposed to generate.

Until recently, because of their high
monochrome print per page costs, most color
devices were purchased as supplementary
items, intended to provide color output
capability while leaving monochrome output
to more cost-effective units around the office.

Nowadays, the issue of how to control color
running costs is becoming more complex with
devices such as the Lexmark C762 being
considered as a replacement for existing
monochrome  printers in the office.

This now poses a new problem for the
buyer/office administrator.

“How do I control

color output without interrupting day to day
monochrome usage?”

Lexmark offers a selection of solutions to
address this issue.

All Lexmark devices can be locked, forcing
the user to input a valid ID code before the
device can be used. Mark Vision Professional
allows the administrator to assign different
access criteria to each user. For example, a
user can be given unlimited access to
monochrome printing while being prevented
from creating color print output.

Because MarkVision Professional is a server-
based solution, the user code directory is
stored  a central location, with devices
browsing to the central file to check on the
authenticity of a user. This allows
updates/new user ID codes to be added to
the list once, in a matter of seconds, rather
than having to send the data to each device
individually.

We would have liked the ability to specify a
print limit within the user ID profile.

For environments
requiring this extra
functionality Lexmark
offers a solution
through a third party
alliance with Pharos.
