Introduction

1.1

Scope

This manual describes the installation and operational features of the USB and SATA
interface Targa Series 4 Removable SATA disk Data Transfer Systems (DTS).  Targa’s
Data Transfer Systems has three major components.

Data Transfer Unit (DTU)

Data Transfer Device (DTD)

Ground Support Unit (GSU)

1.1.1

Data Transfer Unit

The Series 4 DTU is a rugged, field deployed unit providing either SATA or USB
interconnections to the Host system as well as the electrical and mechanical support
infrastructures for the removable Data Transfer Device.

The DTU, conforming to the ARINC CDU style (also called Dzus panel mount) is
equipped with an RTCA-DO-160C, Cat Z compliant 28VDC power supply and two rear
panel mount, MIL-C-38999 connectors.

The DTU front panel accommodates four (4) DZUS ¼ turn fasteners and the DTD access
door.  The door is opened by simply rotating the  ¼ turn  door latch counter-clockwise.
This action releases the door lock mechanism and as the door is opened, an optical sensor
is tripped and the DTU executes an orderly power shutdown of the DTD SATA interface
to the DTD.  Once the door is open, the DTD can be inserted through the front panel slot
and gently pushed into place. The door is locked by simply rotating the latch clockwise.

1.1.2

Data Transfer Device

The Series 4 DTD is a rugged, removable media containing a 2.5" Flash SATA disk with
capacities up to 256 GBytes. Targa is continually evaluating  and offering SATA FLASH
disks from the various SSD manufacturers as well as new designs from established
suppliers.  The SATA disk type and or vendor is represented by the disk ID in the DTD
part number. (see below)
Note:  Targa’s SATA DTD’s are configured for “fixed frequency” mode of operation

1.1.3

Ground Station Unit

The Series 4 GSU is a desktop, office grade unit providing USB or eSATA
interconnections to ground based data preparation/retrieval computer systems as well as
electrical and mechanical support for the removable Data Transfer Device.
