Print Server Installation Manual
6.1 Basic Principles
In AS/400 networks there are two ways to integrate network
printers:
•
using a device description with a print queue
•
using an output queue for lpr printing
Device
Description
In AS/400 networks, this method is usually applied to integrate
network printers. SCS data can be changed, in case of IPDS data
only the fonts can be changed. Error messages from the printer
will accumulate in a message queue so that the printout can easily
be controlled.
To use this integration method, the Print Service Facility/400
(5769TC1 TCP/IP Connectivity Utilities) license program which
is available as standard feature with Release 3.7 and later has to be
installed. Please consult your IBM retailer for more information if
necessary.
Output Queues
The print data is transferred to the KYOCERA-PrintServer via
output queues, using TCP/IP. Output queues are objects within the
AS/400 network designed to coordinate print jobs and send them
to a printer. Each network printer is managed by its own output
queue. In principle, you can print using an output queue from any
AS/400 system in which TCP/IP has been installed. The
disadavantage of this procedure is that AS/400 cannot request the
printer status.
Read the "Basic TCP/IP Terminology" section on page 1-6 if
necessary.
