BEFORE YOU START DIGGING
Before digging, it is a good idea to plan the work first. The operator should inspect the work
area and check for possible hazards. The operator should have a complete understanding
of the work to be performed.
After familiarising yourself with the work area, it’s time to plan the actual digging.
Position the backhoe digger so that you won’t need to reposition the machine throughout
the digging process and to maximise the machine’s efficiency.
Check the excavation area for foreign objects before using the machine.
Carefully dig into the area where there are expected to be objects. If you feel that the bucket
has come into contact with any object, switch off the machine and stop digging immediately.
Operate the machine only while seated at the control levers. Any other method may result in
personal injury or death.
OPERATION
When operating a digger, you should always aim to achieve a smooth technique. Smooth
operation is achieved by learning and mastering the control levers. When working on fragile
surfaces such as concrete, stone ground, sandy or loose ground, lay a plywood board under
the stabilisers to distribute the weight over a larger area.
•
Before operation, make sure that the machine’s stabilisers and wheels are stable on
the ground. The slope of the ground should not exceed 10°. When the unit is in position,
lower the stabilisers to the ground. Take the time you need to learn how the control
works. A description of which lever is for which control is illustrated on the valve cap.
Practising the movements will result in safer work and more efficient operation.
•
Position the bucket perpendicular to the ground.
•
Extend the arm, then lower the boom arm until you feel resistance. Be careful not to lower
the arm so much that the stabilisers are raised off the ground.
•
Angle the bucket to dig into the ground. If any of the movements cause the stabilisers
to shift, raise the arm carefully so that the stabilisers dig in.
•
When the digging movement is complete, tilt the bucket all the way in. Raise the arm
and move it to the side, and empty the bucket.
•
Minor vibrations may occur when using the backhoe digger.
