In speed mode the FPG operates as a remote engine throttle with no regard to pump discharge
pressure. Operators must follow their organization’s standard operating procedures. Speed mode
should not be used when discharges will be opened and closed as it could result in undesired pressure
changes.
Press the FPG Pressure button to transition the FPG control from speed to pressure mode. The engine
speed will not change when the FPG mode is changed from speed to pressure. Press the FPG Idle
button to transition from speed mode to Idle mode.
1.4.3 Pressure Mode
The FPG pressure mode regulates the pump discharge pressure at the operator’s setpoint. The FPG
compares the desired pressure setting to the pump discharge pressure sensor measurement and
increases or decreases the engine speed to bring the pump pressure into regulation.
Press the FPG front panel Pressure button to place the FPG in pressure control mode as long as the
interlocks are set properly as described in Section 1.4.1. The yellow LED on the Pressure button is turned
on when the FPG is in pressure mode and the Status Display will show “PSI Mode”.
Pressure spikes or insufficient pressure can lead to potentially dangerous situations for operators
and equipment. Operators must follow their organization’s standard operating procedures. The FPG
pressure mode regulates the pump discharge pressure regardless of the number of open discharges
as long as there is an adequate water supply. Pressure mode is the preferred FPG control method as it
can respond quickly to changes in flow.
Press the FPG RPM button to transition the FPG control from pressure to speed mode. The engine speed
and pump discharge pressure will not change when the FPG mode is changed from pressure to speed.
Press the FPG Idle button to transition from pressure mode to Idle mode.
1.4.4 Idle Mode
While the FPG is controlling the engine in any mode and the Idle button is pressed, the FPG will enter the
Idle mode and ramp the engine down to the configured Idle speed. The Status Display will show “IDLE”.
The FPG relinquishes control of the engine at the idle speed and the engine returns to its curb idle speed.
The RPM IDLE configuration parameter must be set to a speed greater than the curb idle.
1.4.5 High Idle Mode
The FPG high-idle mode is used to regulate the engine speed at the value set by the HIGH IDLE
configuration parameter. The high-idle mode is used primarily to increase the engine alternator output
current to resolve low battery voltage conditions. The FPG will enter the high-idle mode if the High-Idle
and Throttle Ready inputs are activated by applying vehicle battery power. The FPG will not go into high-
idle mode if the pump is engaged. The high-idle mode engine speed can be changed using the
configuration mode menu.
