Replacing a hot-swap fan
The following notes describe information that you must consider when installing a
hot-swap fan.
Attention:
To ensure proper server operation, if a fan fails, replace it as soon as
possible.

Your server supports a maximum of eight hot-swap fans.

The following illustration shows the location of the hot-swap fans.

Complete the following steps to replace a hot-swap-fan:
1. Read the safety information beginning on page v, and “Installation guidelines” on
2. Remove the cover. See “Removing the cover and bezel” on page 15. The LED
on the failing fan assembly will be lit.
Attention:
To ensure proper system cooling, do not remove the top cover for
more than 30 minutes during this procedure.
3. Place your fingers into the two handles on the top of the failing fan.
4. Press the handles and lift the fan out of the server.
5. Orient the new fan so the LED on top of the fan is to the right of the server.
6. Push the replacement fan assembly into the server until it clicks into place.
7. Replace the cover. See “Installing the server cover and bezel” on page 36.
