xSeries SMP Expansion Module with Dual Xeon
Processors 2.4 GHz/512 KB (71P7919)
is a new upgrade
module required when upgrading the two-way xSeries 440
(model 3RY) from two-way to four-way SMP. This option
includes two 2.4 GHz Xeon Processors and provides:
•
Four CPU connectors
•
32 MB of L4 system cache
•
16 memory connectors supporting an additional 16 GB
of system memory
•
Three SMP expansion ports
This module is installed on the xSeries 440 centerplane
next to the standard module and is compatible with all
future upgrades to Xeon MP processors.

High-Performance Server Subsystems:
These
xSeries 440 models are high-throughput, highly scalable,
two- or four-way, SMP-capable Xeon-based network
servers.
They are equipped with price-performance 2.4
GHz Xeon processors containing 512 KB ECC L2 caches.
High-speed, PC133 ECC SDRAM provides excellent
processor-to-memory subsystem performance.
The two-way processor model (3RY) contains two 2.4 GHz
Xeon processors installed on an SMP expansion module.
The four-way processor model (4RY) contains two 2.4 GHz
Xeon processors installed on two SMP expansion
modules, for a total of four processors.
These Xeon
processors can support up to two-way processing, but
with highly scalable Enterprise X-Architecture design
points, the xSeries 440 server supports two SMP
expansion modules that enable economical four-way
processor support. Both models can be upgraded to Xeon
MP processors that support eight-way processing today
or up to 16-way in the third quarter 2002.
Refer to the
Limitations
section for the supported upgrade path.
The xSeries 440 system architecture is tuned and
engineered with the IBM XA-32 core chipset to optimize
throughput between the powerful Xeon processors, the
XceL4 Server Accelerator Cache, and other components
of the server. The architecture consists of the following
key components:
•
Xeon processors
•
XceL4 Server Accelerator Cache
•
Up to two SMP expansion modules
•
Two PCI-X host-bridge controllers
These next-generation Xeon processors use 100 MHz
common clock speed for external operations.
Both 200
and 400 MHz source synchronous strobes are used to
support 200 MHz (double-pumped) address and 400 MHz
(quad-pumped) data buses to the memory controller. This
allows up to 3.2 GB/s data transfers between memory and
the processors.
Each SMP expansion module contains:
•
Four processor connectors
•
32 MB of XceL4 Server Accelerator Cache
•
16 memory connectors
—
Support up to 16 GB of ECC
SDRAM
•
Memory controller
—
Supports:
−
Data flow between the processor, L4 system cache,
and memory, and the two PCI-X host-bridge
controllers
−
High-speed
port to exploit external PCI-X
expansion
—
Connect an optional RXE-100 Remote
Expansion Enclosure
−
Chipkill ECC memory function
The 16 PC133 SDRAM memory sockets, synchronized to
the 100 MHz processor speed, support up to 16 GB of
system memory on each SMP expansion module for a
total of 32 GB system memory. The memory is four-way
interleaved with two ports to the memory controller
supporting up to 6.4 GB/s data transfers.
The xSeries 440 has two PCI-X host-bridge controllers that
reside between the PCI buses and single or dual memory
controllers, depending upon the configuration.
These
host-bridge controllers support six PCI buses. Two buses
are for integrated functions and four buses are dedicated
to the six, 64-bit, PCI-X expansion slots.
Buses that support integrated functions include:
•
Bus F supports 66 MHz, 64-bit PCI-X controllers:
−
Adaptec 7899 Dual Ultra160 SCSI
−
Broadcom 5700 10/100/1000 Ethernet
•
Bus E supports:
−
Remote Supervisor Adapter installed in dedicated
slot
−
SVGA (S3 Savage 4 LT) EIDE, and super I/O
controllers
The four 64-bit, PCI-X buses support the following 64-bit,
PCI-X slots:
•
Bus D supports one 133 MHz PCI-X adapter
•
Bus C supports one 133 MHz PCI-X adapter
•
Bus B supports two 100 MHz PCI-X adapters
•
Bus A supports two 66 MHz PCI-X adapters
