How you can save energy
The temperature of the rooms
and the operating times of the
heating system have a signifi-
cant influence on the fuel con-
sumption.
A 1 ºC lower room temperature
will result in a fuel saving of up
to 6%. For this reason, bear in
mind the following tips:
• It pays to turn off the radiators
in unused rooms, as long as
there is no risk of frost and no
moisture damage on the building
or furniture is to be expected.
• Set the switch on your heating
controller to “Summer” as soon
as the daily average outside
temperature rises above 12ºC.
• In the main living areas, addi-
tional heat can often be gene-
rated by people, televisions, fire
places, tiled stoves and also by
direct sun light. This can not
be compensated by a weather
dependent regulation. The in-
stallation of thermostatic radiator
valves in these rooms might be
a sensible measure.
Unwanted air drafts at home are
not only unpleasant, but also
indicators of heating energy
losses.
You can save fuel if you......
• keep the doors and windows
closed in winter.
• close the chimney dampers
when the fire is out.
• operate the kitchen and bath-
room ventilation fans only when
vapours and smells need to be
extracted.
• only vent the house for short
time periods and more often.
• seal doors and windows to pre-
vent constant leakages.
Insulation will help retaining
precious heat.
Take advantage of these options
and....
• close the window and door shut-
ters at night.
• draw the window curtains in the
evening.
• Make sure that the heating and
domestic hot water pipes are
insulated in unheated rooms.
Maintaining the temperature of
the radiators as low as possible
will prevent unnecessary heat
losses. For this reason, it is
important that the radiator can
release its heat into the room
without any obstructions. You
should therefore avoid:
• Covered radiators
• floor-length curtains in front of
radiators
• windowsills that do not let air
through because they are clut-
tered with objects.
Savings are also possible in
water heating.
• If you have installed a hot wat-
er circulation pump, it is worth
switching it off during the night
by means of a timer.
