2. Check ratings given in these instructions and on prod-
uct to make sure product is suitable for your application.
3. Make sure installer is a trained, experienced service
technician.
4. After completing installation, use these instructions to
check out product operation.
CAUTION
1. Disconnect power supply before beginning in-
stallation to prevent electrical shock or equip-
ment damage.
2. Ensure combustion chamber is free of oil or oil
vapor before starting system.
LOCATION
The R8991 Interrupted Ignition Recycle Oil Primary and
Ignitor mounts directly on top of the main burner housing.
See Fig. 1 for a typical mounting. Your control can be
mounted differently, depending on the burner manufacturer.
MOUNTING AND LINE VOLTAGE WIRING
CONNECTIONS
Mount hinged side of R8991 control on burner housing.
See Fig. 1. The hinge should be in the open position for
easiest installation and wiring.
IMPORTANT: Before securing the R8991 on the burner
housing, make sure all wires are located within the
wiring enclosure area and are not pinched by the
edges of the burner housing, or R8991, or cad cell
bracket assembly.
WARNING
HAZARDOUS VOLTAGE MAY BE
PRESENT AT TERMINALS.
CAN CAUSE SEVERE INJURY OR
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE.
Make sure all wiring connections are as shown in
Fig. 2. Incorrect wiring connections can cause the
ignition to be on continuously.
All wiring must comply with local codes and ordinances.
1. Make sure all line voltage connections are in wiring
enclosure area at the rear of the burner housing.

R8991
Interrupted Ignition Recycle
Oil Primary and Ignitor
Application
The R8991 Interrupted Ignition Recycle Oil Primary and
Ignitor consists of an interrupted ignition oil primary, solid-
state ignition source and cad cell flame sensor for mounting
directly on an oil burner housing. This single-unit control
(primary and ignitor) operates the oil burner and oil valve
(if desired) in response to a call for heat from the thermo-
stat. The R8991 monitors the burner flame and shuts down
the system on ignition failure (lockout) or on flame failure
during the run cycle. On flame failure during the run cycle,
the control enters a recycle period; during the recycle period,
the control will not attempt to light. A manual reset button is
provided to reset the control after lockout. The reset button
may also be used to return the R8991 to the idle mode during
the trial for ignition, ignition carryover or run mode. If
ignition is successful, the control continues to provide spark
for a period (ignition carryover) after flame is sensed.
An indicator light provides the following lockout and
cad cell indications:
Flashing at 2 Hz (1/4 second on, 1/4 second off): System
is locked out.
Flashing at 1/4 Hz (2 seconds on, 2 seconds off): Control
is in the recycle mode.
On: Cad cell is sensing flame.
Off: Cad cell is not sensing flame.
SPECIFICATIONS:
