EXHAUST SYSTEM: Inspect and apply maintenance as per maintenance schedule.
Never modify your Hirth exhaust system except as per guidelines in Hirth installation
instructions. It has been specifically designed for the purpose in which it will be used.
Changes to the system will affect reliability, performance, engine temperatures, fuel economy
and engine life, warranty, etc. Exhaust system is delivered as pictured above. System can be
altered to allow new shapes and muffler positions as long as the general overall length of new
system is the same as original. Any new bends inserted should be smooth. All new pipe
inserted should have the same inside diameter or slightly larger but never smaller. If exhaust
system is mounted to airframe ball joints should be installed to allow system to bend with
engine movement.
Never remove ball joint springs with an object which may make a mark or slight indentation
on the spring. The mark will become a weak point and may cause failure. Always safety wire
the springs in such a way so if the spring should fail, it would not fall off.
CLEANING THE ENGINE
1.
It is very important to keep your engine clean. Use a petroleum solvent. Do not clean
engine while the engine is hot.
a.
If it is clean it is easy to notice if there is any type of leak or seepage past gaskets and
mating surfaces. Further, it is easy to determine the origin of the leak in order for
repair.
b.
As these engines are air cooled, it is vital that no dirt or oil residue are on the cylinders
or cylinder head fins, otherwise proper cooling will not be obtained.
