Malfunctions – causes and remedies
Kind of trouble

Remedy

Engine will not
start or is reluctant
to start although it
can be turned over
with the starter.
Speed control lever is in stop or
idle position.
No fuel reaching injection pump.
Compression too low:
- incorrect valve clearances.
- cylinder or piston ring wear
- fault in automatic decom-
pression device
Injectors not working correctly.
Fan drive belt broken.
Move lever to 1/2 START or
max. START position according
to operating conditions.
Lever must remain fixed in this
position.
Add fuel.
Prime the delivery pump until
fuel is heard to flow back
through the return line to the
fuel tank.
Check through the entire fuel
supply system systematically.
If there is no improvement,
check
- feed line to engine
- fuel pre-filter
- fuel filter
- delivery pump function.
Check valve clearances and ad-
just if necessary.

If the engine is difficult to start after having been out of use for
a lengthy period, but the problem can be solved by priming the
delivery pump for some time: check that the fuel system is correctly
laid out.
