The tailstock (see
Figure 33) is typically used to
support long workpieces by means of a live or
dead center (refer to
Centers on Page 36). It can
also be used to hold a drill or chuck to bore holes
in the center of a part. Custom arbors and tapers
can also be cut on your lathe by using the offset
tailstock adjustment.

Positioning Tailstock
1. Loosen the tailstock lock nut to unlock the
tailstock from the bedway.
2. Slide the tailstock to the desired position.
3. Tighten the tailstock lock nut to lock the
tailstock against the bedway.
Using Quill
1. Loosen the quill lock lever.
2. Turn the quill handwheel clockwise to move
the quill toward the spindle or counterclock-
wise to move it away from it.
3. Tighten the quill lock lever.
Installing Tooling
This tailstock uses a quill with an MT#3 taper that
accepts a variety of tapered arbors and tooling,
including tang arbors and drill bits (see
Figures
34–35 for examples).

Note: If the tooling has an open hole in the end,
then a screw can be threaded into the end of the
tool to provide a solid surface for the quill pin to
push against when the quill is retracted for tool
removal. Otherwise, removal of such tooling may
be difficult.
