Down-sampling of Mirrored Traffic
The main purpose of down-sampling mirrored traffic is to reduce congestion at the capture port.
When mirroring is enabled, the divide block is used. The divide value [n] will take every nth traffic
sample of the traffic from all mirror-enabled ports and forward them to the capture port.
Note
The divisor number [n] is set for both ingress and egress.
Figure 5-8
Example: Down-Sampling
Figure 5-8
demonstrates down-sampling and mirroring traffic working together to provide
flexibility when mirroring traffic to a capture port. In this example, the user has configured port1
for ingress mirroring, port7 for egress mirroring, and port8 for both ingress and egress mirroring.
Situation A:
Port1, port7, port8 and the capture port are all set for 100Mbps full-duplex mode.
•
The user should set the divide value equal to the total number of traffic directions being
mirrored. In this situation, n = 4 would avoid congestion at the capture port.
•
If the capture port is set for only 10Mbps, the user should set the divide value to n = 40 to avoid
congestion.
Situation B:
Port1, port7 and port8 are set to 100Mbps half-duplex mode, and the capture port is set to 100Mbps
half- or full-duplex mode.
•
The user should set the divide value to n = 1 to avoid congestion at the capture port.
•
If the capture port is set for only 10Mbps, the user should set the divide value to n = 10 to avoid
congestion.
