Issue 2
Installing the Unit in the Shelf
1. Insert the card into its slot in a SpectraComm shelf (with the GDC logo on top) until the card
makes contact with the backplane.
2. Pull down the insertion/extraction tab on the front panel and firmly push the card in until it
seats in the rear connectors.
Power-Up and Self-Test
Before making connections, determine whether the SC-ES can be powered from the same AC
circuit as the equipment connected to its terminal server ports. Having the SC-ES and the
connecting equipment on the same AC circuit prevents large circulating currents caused by
differences in ground potential.
To perform a pre-operation Self-Test, do the following:
1. Ensure the unit is properly seated in the shelf slot.
2. Ensure power is supplied to the shelf.
3. Verify that the Front Panel ON LED illuminates.
4. The SC-ES is now ready for cable connections and configuration to suit your network
requirements.
Shelf and Card Connections
The following paragraphs describe cables, connectors, and pinouts for each Front Panel port or shelf
connector when the SC-ES is installed in GDC shelves and enclosures.
Figure 2-1
shows shelf/card
connections for the SC-ES 9-Port device.
Figure 2-2
shows shelf/card connections for the SC-ES
18-Port device. Note that the 18-port device occupies two slots.
When making card and shelf connections for either SC-ES device:
•
Always adhere to the installation guidelines, cited in the beginning of this chapter, and the
connection guidelines listed below:
•
Observe all ESD precautions during installation procedures. Be sure to wear a properly
grounded antistatic wrist strap.
•
Make all electrical connections through the back panel and front panel connectors provided.
Note
If you cannot determine whether both devices are on the same circuit, verify that the potential difference
between the grounding circuits of the respective power outlets is no more than 0.25V rms.
Note
The AC outlet that powers the SC-ES units should not be under switch control.
