Configure Remote Communication
The SCIP and the terminal server devices can be managed remotely via a Telnet communication to
the command line interface. For heightened security, remote users can start an encrypted Telnet
session to the SCIP via an SSH (Secure Shell protocol) connection. SSH must be enabled at the
SCIP and SSH client software must be installed at the remote workstation to establish a secure
channel for encrypted connections to the SCIP. The basic Telnet/SSH setup procedure is provided
below.
You can also bypass the SCIP CLI and make a Telnet/SSH “cut-thru” connection to each enabled
terminal server port for access to the attached craft device. Telnet/SSH “Cut-thru” procedures
bypass the SCIP CLI and are used in terminal server applications to access devices attached to
enabled ports.
Note
procedures at the end of this chapter as needed.
Basic Telnet/SSH Setup
1. For Telnet Service: The SCIP is configured for Telnet access by default. If Telnet access has
been disabled, use the SCIP craft port interface to enable the service by typing:
services telnet enable
2. For SSH Service: Ensure that the remote workstation is equipped with customer-supplied SSH
client software (such as PuTTY). Enable the SSH service by typing:
services ssh enable
3. At the DOS prompt, type:
telnet
[SCIP IP address]
4. Log into the SCIP with a valid username and password. If necessary, override any other Telnet
CLI session in progress as instructed by the screen prompt. The following Welcome screen
will appear, followed by a command line prompt:

5. Enable supervisor privileges by typing:
enable
[supervisor-level password]
6. SCIP is now operating over a Telnet or SSH connection in supervisor mode, as indicated by
the
#
symbol in the new CLI prompt. All CLI options are available except User Accounts.
You can now remotely configure SCIP to suit your network by typing configurations
commands.
