4.6.1 COM/VOR/ILS/Digital Audio Function and Emergency Mode
Activation of COM MIC KEY* enables COM MIC AUDIO and causes the transceiver to transmit.

COM AUDIO and 500

VOR/ILS AUDIO are 100 mW audio outputs that are intended to drive a
headset or an audio panel. Digital audio outputs from compatible Garmin GMA series audio panels are
3.87 V
rms
into 150 ohms.
For COM SW versions previous to 11.00:
Momentarily depressing the COM REMOTE TRANSFER* button toggles the active and standby COM
frequencies. The COM REMOTE TRANSFER* input may also be used for EMERGENCY operation of
the COM transmitter. If the remote transfer switch is depressed for two seconds, the active COM
frequency changes to 121.50 MHz. Once the emergency frequency is activated through COM REMOTE
TRANSFER*, the GIA 63(X) ignores inputs from the front panel controls for COM selections only. The
pilot may exit this independent mode—restoring COM selection control to the front panel knobs and
buttons—by momentarily depressing the COM REMOTE TRANSFER* switch.
For COM SW Versions 11.00 and later:
The behavior of the COM REMOTE TRANSFER key is configurable in the system configuration. It may
be configured to either toggle the active and standby COM frequencies (in which case it operates in the
same manner as described above for SW versions previous to 11.00), or enter emergency mode
immediately (i.e., tune the COM emergency frequency of 121.500 MHz). It can further be configured to
be either a momentary or latched switch.
Momentarily depressing the VOR/ILS REMOTE TRANSFER* button toggles the active and standby
VLOC frequencies.
(011-00781-0X and 011-01105-0X/-2X/-3X):
When TRANSMIT INTERLOCK* is active, the GIA 63(X) COM receiver sensitivity is decreased. This
input is intended to reduce interference from other transmitters in the aircraft. The TRANSMIT
INTERLOCK* input should be connected to the PTT input of other transmitters in the aircraft. If
connected to multiple PTT inputs, these connections must include diode isolation or multiple radios
transmit simultaneously.
(011-01105-4X only):
The COM SECONDARY TX INTERLOCK* input provides a wired-OR connection with TRANSMIT
INTERLOCK* to eliminate the need for diode isolation if three COM transceivers are used. If more than
three COM transceivers are present, diode isolation must be included externally.
For digital audio installations, all of this information is transferred in the digital audio data stream.
