This chapter describes the following features of the main unit:

High Performance
The main unit is based on symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) architecture. This
architecture provides excellent scalability and reliability, without affecting user
applications.
l
Scalability is supported by up to 16 processors.
l
System boards assure memory module expansion and upgrade to the next
generation of processors. However, note that upgrading the processor clock speed
may result in higher power consumption and a higher heat release value.
l
The main unit central processing unit is a SPARC64 V.
l
CPU modules with different clock speeds can be mounted together in the same
unit.
l
Up to sixteen-way interleaved memory subsystems (depending on the SDRAM
modules) are used.
l
Mounted 64-bit PCI slots can operate at 66 MHz.
l
The system can be connected to PCI/disk boxes that are equipped with PCI slots
operating at 66 MHz in 64-bit mode.
l
CPUs and I/O units can be added without affecting or restricting one another. Up
to 16 CPUs and 36 PCI slots can be used.
l
The Solaris
TM
Operating Environment is supported, and binary compatibility of
applications with units having a SPARC/Solaris operating system environment is
guaranteed.
