LESSON 2: THEORY AND OPERATION
EGR Valve Position Sensor
EGR Valve Position Sensor Block Diagram
The EGR valve position (EGRVP) sensor is built into the EGR valve assembly and is serviced with the EGR
valve assembly.
•
The PCM monitors the EGRVP during closed-loop operation and uses the feedback to modulate the EGR
valve.
The EGRVP is a potentiometer-type sensor. Potentiometers only allow a fraction (signal) of the actual voltage to
return to the PCM.
•
The EGRP sensor uses VREF to produce a linear analog voltage signal.
– Low signal with EGR valve closed
– High signal with EGR valve open
•
The EGR valve solenoid works against spring pressure to open the valve.
•
The potentiometer is supplied with a regulated 5V reference signal and ground circuits from the PCM.
•
DTCs related to the EGRVP sensor circuit can be retrieved with the WDS KOEO or KOER self-tests.
– Refer to the PC/ED for more information about how to identify the cause of DTCs related to the EGRVP
sensor.
