5. MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION
Repairs to sealed components
1) During repairs to s ealed c omponents , all elec tri cal supplies shall be di sc onnec ted f rom
the equipment being work ed upon pr ior to any removal of sealed covers , etc. If it
is abs olutel y necess ary to hav e an electric al supply to equi pm ent during s ervi cing, then a
permanently operating form of leak detec ti on s hal l be loc ated at the m os t c rit ical point to
warn of a potentially haz ardous situation.
2) Par tic ular attenti on s hal l be paid to the foll ow ing to ensure that by worki ng on electric al
components, the casi ng is not altered i n s uch a w ay that the level of pr otection is affec ted.
This shall inc lude damage to c abl es , ex cess iv e number of c onnec tions , terminals not made
to ori gi nal s pecific ation, damage to s eals, incorrec t f it ti ng of gl ands , etc.
Ensure that apparatus is m ounted securely.
Ensure that seals or s eal ing materials hav e not degr aded suc h that they no longer s erve
the purpose of prev enting the ingres s of f lammable atm os pheres. R epl acement parts s hal l
be in ac cordance with the manufac tur er 's speci fi cations.
NOTE: T he us e of sili con sealant may inhibit the effectiveness of some types of leak detec
ti on equipment. Intri nsic ally s afe components do not hav e to be is olated prior to work ing
on them .
Repair to i ntrins ical ly safe components
Do not apply any permanent i nduc ti ve or c apacitance loads to the c irc uit wi thout ens uring
that t hi s wil l not exc eed the permi ssi ble v ol
t
ag
e and current permi tted for the equipment i n
use.
Intri ns ic al ly s afe components ar e the onl y ty pes that can be w or ked on whil e l ive in the
presenc e of a
f lammable atm os phere. The tes t apparatus shall be at the c orr
ec
t rating.
Replac e c ompon
ent
s only w ith parts spec ifi ed by the manufacturer. Other parts may resul t in
the ignition of refrigerant i n the atmosphere f rom a leak .
Cabling
Check that cabling will not be s ubject to wear, corr os ion, ex cess iv e pres sure, v ibration,
sharp edges or any other advers e envi ronmen
tal effect s . The check shall als o take into
acc ount the effec ts of aging or c ontinual vi bration f rom sources s uch as compres sors or
fans .
Detection of f lammable refri gerants
Under no c irc um stanc es shall potenti al sources of ignition be used in the searc hing for or
detec ti on of refri gerant leaks . A halid
e torc h (or any other detector using a nak ed f lame)
shall not be us ed.
Leak detec ti on methods
The fol lowing leak detec ti on methods are deemed acceptable for s ys tems c ontaini ng
f lammable refri ger ant s.
Electronic l eak detectors s hal l be us ed to detect fl ammable r efrigerants, but the s ens it ivi ty
may not be adequate, or may need re-cali bration. (Detec t ion equipment s hall be calibrated in a
refri gerant-free area.) Ens ure that the detector is not a potential s our ce of ignition and is s uitabl
e for the refrigerant us ed. Leak detection equipment shall be set at a percentage of the LF L of
the refr igerant and s hall be c alibrated to the refrigerant employed and the
appropriate percentage of gas (25 % maxim um ) i s confirmed.
Leak detec ti on f luids are sui table for us e w ith mos t refrigerants but the use of detergents
containing chlorine shall be avoi ded as the c hlorine may react with the refri ger ant and corr
ode the c opper pipe-work .
I f a leak is s uspected, all nak ed f lames s hall be removed/ extinguis hed.
I f a leakage of refrigerant is found which requires brazing, all of the refr igerant shall be recov
ered f rom the s ystem, or i solated (by means of shut off v alves ) in a part of the s ystem remote f
rom the leak . Oxy gen f ree ni trogen (OF N) shall then be purged through the sys tem both befor
e and during the brazing process .
