Using the Cot
7.4 Transferring the Patient
To transfer the patient onto the cot:
1. Unfasten the restraints and position the restraint
straps so they will not interfere with transferring
the patient onto the cot.
2. Place the cot beside the patient. Raise or lower
the cot to the patient’s level.
3. Completely lower the sidearms and engage the
wheel locks.
4. Transfer the patient onto the cot using approved
EMS procedures and following your local
protocols.
5. Raise the sidearms. Adjust the backrest and shock
frame as needed.
6. Fasten and adjust the restraints across the patient’s
legs, hips, and chest/shoulders (Figure 31), and
release the wheel locks.
7. Before moving the cot or changing its position,
make sure sheets and other articles will not
interfere with cot operation.
8. Lift only the weight you can safely handle. Use help
as needed (See
Using Additional Help,
page 28).

RECOVERING FROM IMPROPERLY
FOLDING THE COT
If you begin to lower the cot with the drop frame
unlocked (folded), the drop frame will jam against the
lower frame. Raise the cot and extend the drop frame,
then lower the cot.
If you attempt to fold the cot with the drop frame locked
in the middle lift position, the drop frame mechanism
will bind and cause the cot to not set level. If the drop
frame is binding against the ground in the middle locked
position,
do not
release the drop frame hinges; you
could jar the patient and/or damage the mechanism.
To recover, raise the cot to a higher level, extend the
drop frame, and then fold the cot.
Important
Do not fold the cot with the drop frame in the
lowered lift position. Stop in a comfortable
position for the short operator, extend the
frame, then continue to fold the cot.
