Controlling the EMR Using Serial
The card edge of the EMR has a 4-pin serial connector as shown in Figure 2-1. The EMR supports
Quartz protocol commands over this serial port (slave end) for testing purposes… The rear frame
serial connection is designed for test and deployment of a serial connection for Quartz protocol, See
section 2.3.2.2 for a description of the pin-outs of the serial port.
Quartz protocol is a open ASCII bases router protocol that provides unsolicited route updates and a
number of router centric commands to control and get status. For information regarding Quartz
protocol contact Evertz service for our Quartz protocol application document.
To configure the rear serial port connect the the EMX-FC, suggested methods are to use WA-S76
serial adapter or Telnet.
1. In the main menu of the EMX-FC select option 2 (Frame Configuration)
Then option 2 (serial to Ethernet Bridge config)
2. You will see this below pinout as seen in Figure 4-1, where you can enter the IP address of the
EMR router you wish to connect to and the appropriate quartz TCP port you have opened on
the router and the serial config to define if its RS-232 or RS-422. See section 2.3.2.2 for the
appropriate serial connector pinout.

Accessing the Configuration and Monitoring Menu
The EMR router contains a configuration and monitoring menu that allows the user to change some
internal settings of the device and also to monitor various components on the router. Before accessing
the configuration and monitoring menu via Ethernet, the IP address of the device must be set.
The configuration and monitoring menu can be accessed using the Telnet network protocol or a Serial
connection.
NOTE: The device must be rebooted in order for network changes to
take effect.
