6.5 Configure Remote LPD Printing on the
Host
The proc edur e you use to con figure you r Unix host(s)
to allow printin g to your networ k remote pr int se rver var ie s
between diffe rent va r iet ies o f Unix. Th e procedu re below
can be u sed for Unix va r iant s that are relat ed to BSD Un ix,
such as Sun OS o r Linux. Fo r other ve rsion s o f Un ix,
consult your system docum entation, keep in g in mind that :
1. The pr int ser ver should be treat ed as a B SD
networked print se r ver host.
2. Th e host nam e should be the na me (or IP addre ss)
that you ha ve assigned to the print ser ve r.
3. The print er name (or queue na me) on the remote
host should be lpt1, lpt2 or lpt3, the nam e of the p rinter
port on the print serve r.
You will ne ed to perform the tasks below, logged in a s
the sup eru se r ( root). To con figure you r Unix ho st for
print ing,
1. Optionall y, assign a name corre spondin g to the
print ser ve r’ s IP add ress. You can add this addre ss to the
/etc/host s file, b y adding a lin e such a s:

pserver
2. Create a spool d ir ectory fo r the pr inte r in the sa me
dir ector y where spool d ire ctorie s are normall y kept on the
ma chine, such as / var/ spool or / var/ spool/lpd:
