4.7 Beacon output connection

There are two independent Beacon output ports

available on each Sonix Vw2 unit; both divided into

Output and Return terminals.

The Output terminals are the primary terminals and the

Return are optionally used to connect the return side of

a loop.

Maximum cable section supported by the output ports

are:

Solid:

16.0 mm

2

Stranded:

16.0 mm

2

 including sleeved or non-

                         sleeved ferrule

Warning:

 Possible hazardous voltages present.

Great care should be taken during installation and

maintenance of this unit. Cover should not be

removed during live operation. The cover needs

to be replaced after installation or maintenance

of the unit.

4.7.1  Maximum load and fusing

The maximum load that can be connected to a single

Vw2 output port is based on 2 parameters; surge

current and steady state current.

The maximum allowable steady state current is limited

to

10 A

by the internal fuse but can be reduced if a

lower value RCBO is installed in the beacon supply.

The maximum allowable peak surge current is limited to

100 A

 by the on-board relays.

The unit is fi tted with a pair of

10 A

 10 x 38 mm Mersen

fuses, part number S218194.

Warning:

 Only replace fuses with original

manufacturer or equivalent.

Warning:

 Beacons without soft-start circuits can

have peak surge currents of 100x steady state

current.

4.7.2  Connecting beacons as a loop

The Sonix Vw2 unit has been designed to allow for idle

loop health monitoring by energizing the loop for a short

period of time, not enough to activate the attached

beacons, but enough to detect a healthy loop.

The Earth terminals that are part of the Vw2 output

are provided for functional earthing only, Protective

earth connections should be terminated directly to the

protective earth.

4.7.3  Connections as a spur

The fi eld beacon units can be connected as spur, rather

than a loop.

Loop monitoring is not available if beacons are wired as a spur.
