Installation
Note
We strongly recommend that a qualified elec-
trical contractor install this unit.
Accessing the Unit
Note
Always use stainless steel mounting
hardware.
With the circuit breaker access cover open,
remove the 8-32 stainless steel screw located
just below the circuit breakers. The will allow
for removal of the circuit breaker dead-front
cover.
With the dead-front uninstalled, remove the (2)
8-32 stainless steel screws from the bottom of
the Deckhand, closest to the front of the unit.
The lower (trapezoidal shaped) access plate
can now be pivoted up, or removed completely
as needed.
Securing and Mounting
When mounting the Deckhand to a wood post,
use stainless steel lag-bolts and provided
mounting gaskets to provide a proper water-
tight seal. Deckhand can be mounted using
two _-20 lag-bolts in the upper and lower
center mounting holes. Unused holes will be
covered by seal tabs, keeping water from
entering the unit. Replace seal tabs on
unused holes if they are punctured or removed
during installation.
Deckhand can also be mounted to a 4”x 4”
wood post or metal column using the outer
mounting holes and a 5” stainless steel U-
Bolt, and associated stainless steel washers
and nuts.
Electrical Connection
The Deckhand is rated for 125/250V up to
125A. It is constructed for top or bottom entry
using _” to 1-1/4” PVC, metallic liquid-tight,
or non-metallic liquid-tight conduit. The
conduit access to Deckhand can be drilled/
punched on the lower access plate. (See
Figure 2) Listed rain-tight conduit bushings
MUST be used.
Operation
Connect Power Cord to Boat
Insert the proper end of the shore power cord
into the boat’s power inlet connection, twist
the plug to lock, then tighten the locking plug
retainer by twisting the large nut until the unit
is tight to the boat.
Connect Power Cord to Deckhand
With the breakers OFF, insert the shore power
cord into the receptacle and twist the plug
clockwise until the plug locks into the recep-
tacle.
Turn Breaker ON
With both connections secured, turn on the
appropriate breaker. The power indicator on
the boat should indicate a successful attach-
ment of the plug and the receptacle.
Maintenance
Eaton - Marina Power and Lighting produces
units that are designed to withstand the harsh
marine environment. Very little maintenance is
required to keep the units looking new for
many years and to keep the warranty effective.
Exterior Maintenance
To remove dirt, grime, and bird droppings, use
a mild solution of dishwashing detergent at
approximately one teaspoon per gallon of
warm water.
DO NOT use any solvent or corrosion
inhibiting products on any part of the
Deckhand.
DO NOT pressure wash unit or around unit.
Interior Maintenance
Before attempting the following maintenance
procedures, turn off the power to the unit at
the power supply panel.
Note
The breakers on the Deckhand DO NOT turn
the unit power supply off. The bus bar will
still be energized.
• Exposing the Buss Bar Assembly
Annually, remove the dead-front cover of
the Deckhand, and expose the bus bar.
• Maintenance of Buss Bar Assembly
On all units, the bus bar should be visually
examined for excessive heating. If poten-
tially faulty or loose joints are found, they
should be tightened or replaced. Most
mechanical lugs are made of aluminum
and are very susceptible to galvanic corro-
sion.
If the set screw cannot be tightened,
replace the lug or panel interior as needed.
If there appears to be corrosion around the
copper to aluminum connection, remove
the copper wire and clean the wire. Then
coat the wire with anti-corrosion grease,
and retighten the assembly.
• Receptacles and Breakers
The receptacles and breakers should be
examined annually, and if any sign of
heating is evident, the receptacles or
breakers should be replaced.
• Solvents
DO NOT spray any solvents on the elec-
trical components. Solvents will cause
stress cracking of the polymeric materials
and will void warranty.
