7.7 Examine the rear end of the Steri-Mate Handpiece, both ends of the Steri-Mate Handpiece adapter, and the end of
the handpiece cable and ensure that the connectors are clean and dry. Install the Steri-Mate Handpiece adapter
on Steri-Mate Handpiece, then install the Steri-Mate Handpiece adapter on the end of the handpiece cable.
7.8 Holding the handpiece over a sink with the open end up, open the roller valve and slide clamp to fill the tubing and
handpiece with lavage solution. Check for fluid leaking at the connection of the tubing to the adapter. Close the
slide clamp.
7.9 Insert the desired sterilized ultrasonic insert in the handpiece and return the handpiece to its holder.
7.10 Inflate the infuser bag to approximately 50 mm Hg on the gauge, but not greater than 150 mm Hg.
7.11 To use the Cavitron
®
Ultrasonic Scaler, activate the footswitch, release the slide clamp, and adjust the tubing
roller valve for the desired spray delivery. There must always be lavage flow through the handpiece whenever the
Cavitron
®
Ultrasonic Scaler is energized.
7.12 At any time during the procedure that the Cavitron
®
Ultrasonic Scaler is de-energized, the flow of lavage should
be turned off by using the slide clamp.
• A 15 mL/min flow rate will allow a 33 minute scaling procedure.
7.13 Periodically check the infuser bag pressure during the procedure to maintain adequate fluid flow. Adjust pressure
between 50-150 mmHg.
• As pressure decreases, re-pressurize the bag or increase flow by adjusting the roller clamp. If bag is re-
pressurized, adjust the roller clamp to provide the desired lavage flow.
7.14 At the end of the procedure, close the roller valve or slide clamp. Open the needle valve on the infuser bag
inflation bulb and allow the infuser bag to deflate.
7.15 Remove the tubing from the Steri-Mate Handpiece Adapter. Remove the IV solution bag from the infuser bag
clear sleeve and discard the IV bag and tubing set.
7.16 Remove the Steri-Mate Handpiece and Steri-Mate Handpiece Adapter from the handpiece cable. Follow the separate
Infection Control Procedures provided.
