Operating Plato using an Air Mouse remote controller
If you do not wish to use a separate tablet or smartphone controller, it is possible to operate
Plato using commercially available, Android-compatible remote pointer devices, commonly
called an Air Mouse. For ease of use this type of operation would require connection to an
HDMI screen to provide visual feedback on what Plato is doing.
This could be useful if you want to drive Plato without using an Android or iOS tablet or
smartphone, or if you would like to try controlling a third party Android application running
on Plato.
First, configure the screen in HDMI Mirror Mode (see section 3.8.2).
Normally the Air Mouse
will have a USB dongle which receives radio control signals from the hand-held controller.
This should be inserted into one of Plato
’s spare USB slots. Note that you may need to reboot
Plato after inserting the Air Mouse dongle.
Once the Air Mouse is plugged in and running, its pointer should be visible on the HDMI
screen. As you wave the controller through space, the on-screen pointer will match your
movements across the screen. Instead of activating a control via the touchscreen, simply
move the on-screen pointer to the Android control you want to modify, and use the action
button on the remote Air Mouse to activate the control.
Certain devices are equipped with basic media controls (play, pause, mute etc.) and these
should operate Plato
’s media player as you would expect
.
The most useful devices are also equipped with a full QWERTY remote keyboard. In this case
whenever an edit-text control is activated text entry should be made via the Air Mouse
keyboard which will override any in-app keyboard control.
The following devices are known to work with Plato:
•
MINIX NEO A2 Lite
•
Rii mini i25
•
Rii mini K08
