Conrad 84 17 78 Operating Manual Download Page 2

Intended use

The tachometer’s function is to display the motor speed of vehicles with a 4-stroke spark-ignition engine.
It can only be used for the 12V direct current supply system with the negative pole of the battery at the car body, and can only
be installed and used in cars with this supply system on board. Never connect the device to any other power supply.
Use is only permitted inside the car, not outside. Contact with moisture or dampness must be avoided at all times. The user
must make sure that the way the product is installed protects the product from humidity and moisture.
Any use other than the one described above could damage this product and involves the risk of short circuits,

fi

 re, electric

shock, etc.
No part of the product should be modi

fi

 ed or reassembled.

Always observe the safety instructions.

Safety instructions and hazard warnings

In the event of damage caused by failure to observe these safety instructions, the warranty will be null

and void. We do not assume liability for any resulting damage.

We do not assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by improper use or non-
compliance with the safety instructions. In such cases, the warranty will be null and void.

An exclamation mark inside a triangle indicates important instructions in the operating manual. Prior to
operation, please read through the operating instructions completely. They contain important instruc-
tions for correct operation.

•   Check the product for any damage before using it. If the device is damaged, you must not use it.
•  For safety reasons, any unauthorised conversions and/or modi

fi

cations to the product are not permitted.

•   The device may only be used with the 12V DC vehicle power supply (with the negative terminal of the battery connected to

the body of the vehicle). Never connect the tachometer to any other voltage supply.

•  Make sure you use the device properly. Therefore, please follow the operating instructions carefully.
•   If you have doubts about how the equipment should be operated or how to safely connect it, consult a trained technician.
•   Check the tachometer and the connection cables from time to time for signs of damage. Should the device or a connection

cable show signs of damage, it must be repaired professionally by a trained technician.

•   Avoid exposing the product to heavy mechanical stress and do not expose it to strong vibrations, high levels of moisture,

water droplets or splash water.

•   Never pour liquids over the tachometer. There is extreme risk of thereby causing a

fi

re or an electric shock. If any liquid

should nevertheless penetrate the device, immediately disconnect it from the power supply network and contact a specialist.

•  The product is not suitable for children to interact with. Keep children well away from it.
•  Do not leave packing materials unattended. They may become dangerous playthings for children.
•   If in doubt about how to connect the device correctly, or should any questions arise that are not answered in these operating

instructions, please contact our technical advisory service or another specialist.

•  Moreover, observe the additional safety instructions in each individual section of these instructions.

Installation

The general safety instructions and regulations must be heeded without fail when performing installa-

tion work in, around and under the vehicle. Also observe the safety instructions of the vehicle manufac-
turer.

Modi

fi

cations to the vehicle that become necessary as a result of the installation of the device, must

always be carried out in a way that causes neither the roadworthiness nor the structural stability of the
vehicle to be impaired. If you are in doubt when selecting a place for installation, consult your vehicle
dealer.

Before drilling holes, make sure that no electric cables, brake cables or similar will be damaged in the
process.

When using tools for mounting your device, observe the tools manufacturers‘ safety instructions.

Never install the device within the functional range of an airbag or such that it impairs the driver‘s vision.

When installing the product, consider the risks that can arise from devices becoming dislodged in the
event of an accident. Therefore, secure the device

fi

rmly and in a place where it cannot become a danger

to the driver and/or passengers.

The tachometer may be secured with the supplied U-shaped mounting bracket in an opening of 53 mm diameter in the
dashboard.
Matching mounting and installation casings with a standard opening for mounting devices are available in retail stores
(in places, even vehicle-speci

fi

c casings), which can also be used for installing the tachometer.

•  Select an appropriate installation location. The installation location must be well visible from the driver’s seat.
•   When selecting the installation site, consider the required installation depth. Take particular care to ensure suf

fi

 cient distance

to moving vehicle parts (rods, levers, etc.).

•   Remove the two nuts on the back of the tachometer and

fi

 t the supplied screws.

•   Place the tachometer in the installation opening and secure it by

fi

xing the U-shaped mounting bracket with the supplied

screws.

Altering the lamp colour / lamp replacement

•  Pull out the lamp unit from the back of the tachometer.
•  Put one of the supplied coloured caps onto the lamp bulb if you wish to change the lamp colour.
•   To exchange a defective lamp, the entire lamp unit must be replaced. These are available from the Conrad product range.
•  Next, reinsert the lamp unit into the tachometer.

Connection

The electric connection should always be carried out by a specialist.

To avoid short circuits and any resulting damage to the device, the negative terminal (chassis) of the
vehicle battery has to be disconnected

fi

 rst.

Only reconnect the negative terminal of the battery when you have completely connected the tacho-
meter and you have checked the connection.

To check the voltage of the vehicle system leads, only use a volt meter or a diode test lamp, as normal
test lamps consume excessive energy and may thus damage the vehicle‘s electronics.

When installing the cables, ensure that these are not squashed or scraped on sharp edges. Use rubber
grommets at cable gland points.

For connection, only use cables that are suitable for vehicles. Cords, bell wires etc.. are not suited for
installation in vehicles.

Likewise, to connect leads, you may use only plug-in connectors that are suitable for vehicles and these
must be

fi

tted to the leads using appropriate tools.

Try to install the connection leads along the vehicle‘s cable tree and avoid loose cable loops that could
become caught in the pedals of the vehicle. This could lead to life-threatening situations while driving.

•  Disconnect the negative pole of the on-board battery.
•  Set the DIP switch on the back of the tachometer to the number of cylinders of your engine.
  4 = 4-cylinder engine/ 6 = 6-cylinder engine / 8 = 8-cylinder engine
•  Push the supplied protection tube over the tachometer’s 3 leads (red, black and green).
•   Connect the tachometer‘s black cable to the vehicle frame or to a ground lead (Clamp 31).
•   Connect the tachometer‘s red cable with the 12V ignition (Clamp 15). This is a cable that carries 12V only when the ignition

is turned on.

•   Connect the tachometer‘s green cable to Terminal 1 of the ignition coil (where the ignition system has just a single coil). This

is a thin cable that drives the RPM signal.

If your vehicle doesn‘t have a conventional single-coil ignition system, then the green cable must be connected to a contact

that drives the RPM signal.

   You can only

fi

nd out whether this is possible in your speci

fi

c vehicle and if so, where exactly this contact is situated, from a

specialist workshop or from your vehicle dealer.

IMPORTANT! On no account should the green wire be connected to one of the thickly insulated spark plug wires!

•  Connect the red cable on the lamp unit with the power supply for the dashboard light (Clamp 58).
•  Connect the black cable on the lamp unit with the vehicle frame or a ground lead (Clamp 31).
•  Check the correct connection once again and then reattach the negative pole of the on-board battery.
•  Check whether the tachometer and the lamp are working.
•  Using the button in the centre scale, set the red indicator for the maximum permissible rpm of your engine.

Maintenance and Care

The outside of the product should be cleaned with a clean dry cloth or brush only.
Never use caustic cleaning agents or chemical solutions, as they could damage the surface of the casing.

Disposal

Electronic devices are recyclable waste materials and must not be disposed of in the household waste!

Dispose of an unserviceable product in accordance with the relevant statutory regulations.
