Operating Information
Gauges and Functions
Engine Water Pressure
Registers the engine's
cooling water circulation, in
pounds per square inch
(PSI). Refer to the engine
operator's manual for correct
specifications. Use this
gauge to determine if the
engine cooling water is
properly operating.
Engine Oil Pressure Gauge
Measures the pressure of
the engine's lubricating oil,
in pounds per square inch
(PSI). Refer to the engine
operator's manual for
correct specifications. Many
serious engine problems
are reflected on oil pressure
gauge readings. If the
pressure is lower than the manufacturer's
specification, immediately shut off the engine. Have
your Cobalt dealer correct the problem before
operating the engine.
Tachometer
Registers engine speed in
revolutions per minute
(RPM). Use this gauge to
keep the engine within the
proper operating range.
Refer to the engine
operator's manual for correct
specifications.
Speedometer
Registers forward speed in
miles per hour. Since the
speedometer input is
received from water
pressure, accuracy is only
approximate.
Engine Oil Temperature
Indicates the oil
temperature inside the
engine. Refer to the engine
operator's manual for
normal operating
temperature. After starting
the engine, check your
temperature gauge for
abnormally high readings. If
the reading is outside the manufacturer's operating
range, immediately turn off the engine. An
abnormally high temperature is the result of low oil
level, aged oil or the incorrect viscosity. See your
Cobalt dealer when experiencing a high oil
temperature reading. The oil temperature gauge is
not a substitute for checking oil levels.
Engine Water Temperature
Indicates the water/coolant
temperature inside the
engine. Refer to the engine
operator's manual for normal
operating temperature. After
starting the engine, check
your temperature gauge for
abnormally high readings. If
the reading is outside the
manufacturer's operating range, immediately turn
off the engine. An abnormally high temperature is
the result of cooling water system blockage. See
your Cobalt dealer when experiencing a high
engine temperature reading.
Voltmeter
Indicates the condition of the
engine's cranking battery in
volts DC. With the ignition
switch on and the engine not
running, a reading between
11.5 and 12.5 volts indicates
a fully charged battery. With
the engine running at idle,
the gauge should read
between 10 and 12 volts. With the engine running
at cruising speeds and above, it should show 12 to
14 volts. See your Cobalt dealer and have the
charging system checked if the voltmeter reads
below these normal ranges.
