- In case the trailers gets unhooked while running, this cable ensures emergency braking.
However, it should be loose enough so the trailer can negociate sharpbends without
the handbrake being pulled.

1.2.4 Handbrake
- The handbrake is fifted with an energy-storing spring. The force applied to the hand lever
is transmitted to the wheel brakes through the same transmission unit as the hydraulic braking
system.
1.3 Wheel bearings
- They do not require any maintenance. However, they must be checked regularly in this way:
Raise the trailer by means of a jack and release the handbrake.

Make sure each wheel turns on its spindle without wobbling.

If some loosening can be noticed, the bearings must be either tightened up again or replaced.

Foreword
This leaflet gives useful information about the maintenance of your Cheval Liberté/Debon trailer.
You are therefore advised to read it throught as to get familiar with the equipment. All our trailers
are not necessary equipped with all the optional systems mentioned in this leaflet.
The star indicates (*) that theses accessories are optional or available on some models only.
The reliability of a trailer highly depends on the way it is maintained. This is a prerequisite to your right
to the warranty.
For the maintenance of your trailer, or in case you have a problem, Cheval Liberté/ Debon dealers
are entirely at your service.
Accessories and spareparts
Any accessory or element added to the trailer which is not approved by Cheval Liberté/Debon,
or any inappropriate sparepart might cause irreparable damage.
For safety reasons, you are advised to use genuine spareparts and accessories.
Such spareparts and accessories have been specially designed for your trailer and, as they
are certified by Cheval Liberté/Debon, within the enforced provisions, we are responsible for them.
Every dealer will provide genuine spareparts and accessories as well as expert advice.
The Cheval Liberté/Debon warranty
It is a two-year warranty as from the date of purchase, whatever the mileage.
Aluminium floor and aluminium anodized panels: 5-year against rust and moisture.
It covers both parts and labour costs at the nearest dealership.
The customer assumes full responsibility for conveying the trailer.
Any sort of damage caused by horses or any other animal or transported material is not covered
by the warranty.
The tyres are not included in the warranty. (See Maintenance page 3).
This warranty does not entitle you to receive any compensation or damages.
The assessment of damage is to be carried out in our workshops where adequate
checking instruments can be used.
Cheval Liberté/Debon remains the ownership of these goods until payment in full is made.
Our trailers are designed to satisfy the transport of animals and/or equipment.
Sealing is not required for this type of transport, then the manufacturer
is not giving any guarantee for waterproofing.
1 Maintenance
In order to ensure the good running of your trailer as long as possible, you should have it
checked by specialists.
You are strongly advised to have the maintenance of the axle and of the braking system
carried out by a Cheval Liberté/ Debon dealer. If the trailer is not frequently used, it is necessary
to have it checked at least once a year.
1.1 Wheel nuts
- After doing the first 30 miles, make sure the wheel nuts are still tightened. If they aren't tighten
them up again, one after the other, crosswise. (torque:115 to 125nm)
- After changing a wheel, the nuts may need to be tightened up again after doing 30 miles.
1.2 Braking
1.2.1 Inertial braking system
(braked models)
- After doing 600 miles or so, check the braking system of the trailer.
- It needs to be adjusted again if the towing bar can be pushed back of one third of this play
(one and a half inch) from the hook.
- These checks should be renewed every 300 miles or at least once a year if the mileage is low.

1.2.2Automatic disengagement
- Our trailers are fifted with the automatic disengagement of the inertial braking system,
which permits backing.
1.2.3Emergency braking cable
1.4 Greasing and oiling
- Grease the inertial braking system and oil moderately all the moving parts such as the bolts
and joints of the handbrake and of the reversing lever.
- Clean the hook, oil the towing bar moderately and grease the ball rest.
- Check the proper working of the following:
The fastening of the hatch or backdoor(s)
The vents
The different hinges
Grease and oil them moderately.
1.5 Cleaning
Bodywork of the trailer

- The bodywork of the trailer can be cleaned with the same product as those normally used
for cars. You are advised to apply some wax on the bodywork which should be polished
at least once a year.
- The inside of the trailer can be hosed down. Let it entirely air dry before covering
or storing your trailer.
- The rubber floor covering can be easily cleaned. (depending of equipment)
- The glued paneling is not to be cleaned with a high-pressure spray.
- The metallic parts have to be treated once in a while with rust preventives.

Rubber seals
- From time to time, the watertight seals should be treated with some product specially designed
to protect rubber.
So, they will remain supple for a longer time and will not be damaged by frost.
Steel rims
▪
- Remember to clean the rims and the wheel nuts with detergents so as to remove mud,
salt and brake dust deposits.
Alloy rims
▪
- To prevent the corrosion caused by salt and brake dust, it is necessary to clean such rims
every two weeks at least.
- After the rims have been cleaned with a non-corrosive product specially designed for alloy rims,
they can be waxed every three months. (Do not use any polish or corrosive product.)
- If the outer coating has been scratched, it is preferable to repair the damage with lacquer
without delay.
1.6 Bodywork
To help you fix any damage caused to the bodywork, Cheval Liberté/Debon provides repair kits
for fiberglass. Please ask your Cheval Liberté/Debon dealer for further information.
1.7 Tyre pressure
The tyre pressure needs to be always high enough and adapted to the load inside the trailer.
The recommended tyre pressure depends on the wheels dimensions and the trailer PTAC.

2 General information
2.1 Advice for safe towing
- Make sure the lights and the indicators work properly before driving off.
- Adapt your speed to traffic conditions, road surface and the load inside the trailer.
- When the road surface is smooth or slippery, both the braking efficiency and the stability
are limited due to a lesser grip of the tyres.
- Avoid driving fast when the weather conditions and the winds are unfavorable, especially
when driving downhill.
2.2 Trailer Loading
The user is responsible for the loading. He must respect some elementary rules:
The loading must be known and controlled.

The technical characteristics appearing on the descriptive notice or on the registration

document may sometimes be incomplete. In that case, please contact your dealer.
The loading partition may influence the car handling and your safety.

2.3 Braking
- A car towing a trailer cannot be driven in the same way as a car without anything in tow.
Unexperienced drivers are therefore advised to have a try, carefully, under easy circumstances.
- A vehicle towing a trailer requires a longer braking distance which also depends on the load
inside the trailer.
CAUTION ! The inertial braking system of a trailer is not ABS regulated.
-With inertial brakes, it is recommended to brake gradually in order to avoid the jerks
that might be caused by the blocking of the wheels of the trailers.
2.4 Speed limits
- First of all, abide the highway code.
- When travelling abroad, respect the speed limits for vehicles towing trailers.
- When using tyres with 100kmh (60mph) specified on their walls, be careful not to exceed
that speed, especially in those countries where you you are allowed to drive over 60mph.
2.5 Alteration to the trailer
- No alteration should be carried out on a trailer, certainly not on its chassis or approved elements.
2.6 Precautions to be taken in winter
- If your trailer is not parked inside a shed in winter, it is preferable to clear the snow off it.
