INSTRUCTION MANUAL
50 General
50.1 An appliance shall be provided with legible instructions pertaining to:
a) The risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons that may be associated with its use,
b) Operation and installation,
c) User maintenance and storage; and as applicable,
d) Grounding or double insulation.
50.2 The text of all required instructions shall be the words specified or words that are equivalent, clear,
and understandable.
Exception: If an appliance is such that the specified wording is unnecessary or conflicting, the wording
may be omitted or modified, as appropriate.
50.3 The instruction manual shall list any accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer or are
mentioned in the instructions. Also see 49.9.
50.4 The manual shall indicate that the appliance is for household use. Also see 49.8.
51 Instructions Pertaining to a Risk of Fire, Electric Shock, or Injury to Persons
51.1 Instructions pertaining to a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons shall warn the user of
reasonably foreseeable risks and state precautions that should be taken to reduce such risks.
51.2 Instructions pertaining to a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons shall be:
a) In the first part of the manual,
b) Before the operating instructions,
c) Separate in format from other instructions related to assembly, operation, maintenance, and
storage, and
d) A permanent part of the manual.
51.3 The height of the lettering in the text and illustrations of the instructions specified in 51.5 shall be as
follows:
a) Upper case letters – not less than 5/64 inch (1.9 mm);
b) Lower case letters – not less than 1/16 inch (1.6 mm);
c) The statements,

″
and
″
SAVE THESE
INSTRUCTIONS,
″
required by 51.4 – not less than 3/16 inch (4.8 mm).
