E. HEATING SYSTEMS
Forced Air Diesel Furnace
Libertas is equipped with a forced air, diesel fired furnace. The fuel comes from the engine diesel tank.
The furnace is located in the port cockpit lazarette. The forced air furnace operates on the 12 volt DC
system.
The furnace control is located to the left of the charting table. Vents for the heater are located in the head,
main salon, and both cabins.
The exhaust for the furnace is located on the transom on the aft, port side.
Caution: This exhaust can
become quite hot and will cause burns if touched.
Also, be careful not to hang any fenders over the
exhaust.
Operation is straight forward. Flip the on switch to activate the unit. This will take several minutes.
The
important part is to start the heater with the thermostat on the lowest level, then adjust as necessary.
The heater will take 10+ minutes to cycle up. Do not interrupt this cycle.
Turning the heater off needs to be completed in stages, too. Rotate the temperature dial to low and
allow the heater to cool down for about 15 minutes. This allows the diesel fuel to drain out of the
system. Fuel may drip from the transom vents if this procedure is not followed. Finally, flip the
switch to the off position.
Do not turn the heater back on for 15-20 minutes to allow the “close down” cycle to finish.
Space Heater (110 Volt AC)
A 110 volt AC space heater can be used when connected to shore power. Be sure to place this heater away
from flammable materials when it is turned on.
