RADIO BEACONS
EPIRB – Emergency Position Indicating
Radio Beacons are buoyant radio distress
beacons that transmit a signal to satellite
receivers and are relayed to rescue
coordination centers. Register your EPIRBs
with the appropriate agency for your area.
FLAG DISTRESS SIGNALS
Flags are another way of indicating distress
and the need for assistance.
Some Flag and Flag configurations for
distress include:
•
A square black flag with a ball (or
something resembling a ball) above
or below it is a distress signal.
•
The International Code signal for
distress is the displaying of flags “N”
(November) and “C” (Charlie).
•
A flag displaying a black square and
ball on an orange background.
PYTOTECHNICS
Pyrotechnics (or Flares) are very effectively
used as distress signals, especially in times
of reduced visibility or darkness.
Pyrotechnic devices are very dangerous
and cause serious personal injury, death, or
damage to personal property if used
improperly. Always ensure that you are
familiar with the particular type of
pyrotechnic device you are using prior to
attempting to deploy it. Most devices have
instructions included with them. Take the
time to read them and adhere to the
manufacturer’s specifications for its use.
Several types of flares are available to
boaters, with each type providing a variety
of advantages over the others. It is a good
idea to carry more than one type of
pyrotechnic device on your vessel.
Some types of flares include:
•
Parachute Types (Type A)
•
Multi-star Rockets (Type B)
•
Hand Held (Type C)
•
Smoke Signal (Type D)
Maintenance
Cleaning – Clean your CCBL1 with mild
soap and water. The use of gasoline,
solvents, chemicals, or overly acidic or
alkaline compounds could damage your
boat and void warranty.
Always rinse your boat and its hardware
after use to remove any contaminants that
may have collected on the hull or hardware.
