APPROVED VESSELS AND MATERIALS
Materials that can be used/placed in a microwave oven:
Aluminium foil Only for covering. Small, soft pieces can be used for covering thin
pieces of meat (red or white) to prevent them being overcooked. Sparks
may be generated if the foil is too close to the oven walls. The foil must
be at least 2.5 cm from the oven walls.
Chinaware
Only microwave safe. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use
if damaged or cracked/chipped.
Glass jars
Always remove the lid. Use only for heating food. Most glass jars are
not heat resistant and can crack.
Glassware
Only microwave safe glassware. Check that it has no metal decoration/
parts. Do not use if damaged or cracked/chipped.
Cook-in bags
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use metal bag closers.
Perforate the bag so that steam can escape.
Paper plates
and mugs
Only for brief cooking/heating. Do not leave unattended while
cooking.
Paper towels
For covering food during heating and for absorbing grease/fat. Only
for brief, supervised cooking.
Greaseproof
paper
As a cover to prevent splashing and when steaming.
Plastic
Only microwave safe. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Should
be marked “microwave safe” or similar. Certain plastic vessels soften
when the food inside then gets warm. Cook-in bags and entirely sealed
plastic bags should be perforated in accordance with the instructions on
the packaging.
Plastic foil
Only microwave safe. Use for covering food to preserve moisture
during cooking. Do not let the plastic foil come into contact with the
food.
Thermometers
Only microwave safe food preparation thermometers.
Wax paper
As a cover to prevent splashing and to preserve moisture.
Certain non-metallic vessels and materials are not suitable for use in a microwave oven.
If you are doubtful, you can test the vessel/material as follows:
1. Fill a microwave safe container with 250 ml of water and put it in the oven along with the
vessel/material.
2. Run at maximum power for 1 minute.
3. Carefully feel the vessel/material. If the empty vessel/material is warm, it is not suitable for
cooking in a microwave oven.
4. Do not exceed the cooking time of 1 minute.
