8.1 Clean the sensor
Wintersense SDI-12 smart sensors are designed to be low maintenance. Like any non-invasive
sensor, however, objects in front of the sensing element can influence readings. Regularly check,
and when necessary, clean the sensor to remove any dirt, insects, or spider webs that may block
the sensing element.
To clean the sensor:
1. Remove the Wintersense SDI-12 unit from the mounting pole and take it down to ground
level.
2. Remove the six screws attaching the sensor hood to the mounting bracket.
3. Lift the sensor hood up and off the mounting bracket.
4. Wipe down the hood to remove any dirt.
5. Use a clean cloth to wipe down the internal box, bracket, and front metal plate.
6. Use an air duster to clean dirt from within the sensing element. If there appears to be any
deposits on the detector window, use a cotton bud (swab) dipped in electronics-grade
alcohol to gently clean the detector window.
7. Remove the four screws attaching the electronics box inside the hood.
8. Replace old desiccant bags with new.
9. Replace the electronics box and secure the four screws.
10. Reattach the hood with the six mounting screws, making sure the anti-vibration spring
washers are still in place.
11. Adjust the angle of the hood so it is between 30 and 60 ° from vertical.
