TESTING STARTER ON MOTORCYCLE

START RELAY TEST

1.

See 

Figure 1-6

. The start relay can be tested using the

motorcycle's 12-volt battery and a multimeter.

a.

Unplug connector from relay.

b.

To energize the relay connect relay terminal "85" to
the negative battery terminal, and relay terminal "86"
to the positive battery terminal. Some diodes contain
internal diodes. If the applied voltage isn't the correct
polarity, the diode could be damaged.

c.

Check for continuity between the "30" and "87" ter-
minals. A good relay shows continuity (continuity
tester lamp "on" or a zero ohm reading on the ohm-
meter). A malfunctioning relay will not show continuity
and must be replaced.

2.

If the start relay is functioning properly, proceed to
