Carrying children in safety
Important considerations
Do not leave children unattended in the
car, as they could otherwise endanger
themselves and/or other persons by opening
the doors, for example.
<
All the seats in your BMW, except for the
driver's seat and the third seat row
*
, are in prin-
ciple suitable for the installation of universal
child restraint systems for all age groups, pro-
vided these have been approved for the age
group in question.
Always carry children at the rear
Accident research has shown that the safest
place for children is on the rear seat.
Children under 12 or smaller than
150 cm, approx. 5 ft, should always travel
on the second-row seats using suitable child
restraint systems, otherwise there is a greater
risk of injury in the event of an accident.
<
Exception for the front passenger's
seat
If you nevertheless need to fit a child
restraint system on the front passenger's
seat, the passenger's front and side airbags
must be deactivated, otherwise a child travel-
ling on that seat will be at considerable risk of
injury if the airbags are triggered, even if it is
wearing a child restraint system.
<
You can have a key-operated switch fitted for
disabling the front and side airbags on the front
passenger's side. BMW Service will be pleased
to advise you on this.
Fitting child restraint
systems
BMW Service can supply suitable child restraint
systems for every age and weight category.
When selecting, installing and using child
restraint systems, observe the manufac-
turer's instructions, as the protective effect
could otherwise be impaired.
Following an accident, have all components of
the child restraint system and the seat belt that
was used to secure it checked and renewed if
necessary. Always have this work performed
either by BMW Service or by a workshop that
operates to BMW specifications and has suita-
bly trained personnel.
<
Comply with the notes on seat belts on
page
, or there may be a risk to your
personal safety.
<
If a third seat row
*
is fitted, ensure that
the second-row seat on which the child
restraint system is fitted is correctly engaged,
otherwise there is an increased risk of injury for
the child in the event of an accident.
Do not fit child restraint systems on the third-
row seats, as these child restraint systems will
afford less protection there.
