2.
Introduce the head of the jack into the rec-
tangular recess as it is extended, see detail.
3.
Continue to turn the crank handle until the
wheel you wish to change is lifted clear of
the ground.
Fitting the wheel
1.
Take out the wheel studs and remove the
wheel.
2.
Remove heavy dirt deposits from the wheel
and hub contact faces and clean the wheel
studs.
3.
Fit the new wheel or the compact wheel and
insert at least two diagonally opposed
wheel studs.
If the car is not fitted with alloy wheels of the
Genuine BMW type, note that different
wheel studs may be needed.
4.
Insert and screw up the remaining wheel
studs, then tighten them all firmly, working
across the hub rather than round it.
5.
Lower the car and remove the jack.
After fitting
1.
Tighten the studs alternately on opposite
sides of the hub.
For safety reasons, have the wheel
stud tightening torque checked with-
out delay, using a calibrated torque wrench.
The correct tightening torque is 140 Nm,
approx. 103 lb ft.
<
2.
Stow the wheel with the faulty tyre in the
load area.
Because of its size, the wheel with the
faulty tyre will not fit beneath the floor
panel flap.
<
3.
Correct the tyre pressure at the earliest
opportunity.
Prevent dirt entering the tyre valves
by attaching screw-on dust caps. Dirt
in the tyre valve can often lead to a gradual
loss of air pressure.
<
4.
Initialise the Run Flat Indicator, see
page
5.
Replace the damaged tyre as soon as pos-
sible and have the new wheel balanced.
Driving with the compact wheel
Drive with caution and do not exceed 80 km/h,
approx. 50 mph.
The car's handling properties, such as track
stability during braking, braking distances and
the self-steering properties at the limits of han-
dling, may have changed. These effects will be
more pronounced in combination with winter
tyres.
Only one compact wheel may be fitted at
one time. Fit a wheel/tyre combination
that matches that of the remaining wheels/tyres
at the earliest possible opportunity.
