CHARGING THE UNIT
This unit is shipped in a partially charged state.
• Charge the unit before first use using the mains
charging adapter for 48 hours.
Lead-acid batteries require routine maintenance
to ensure a full charge and a long battery life. All
batteries lose energy from self-discharge over time
and more rapidly at higher temperatures. When the
unit is not in use, Black & Decker recommend that the
battery is charged at least every 30 days.
• Check the battery charge level by pressing the
battery status pushbutton. The LED charge status
display will indicate the level of battery charge. When
only one red LED lights, charge the unit.
Note:
Charging the battery after each use will prolong the battery
life; frequent heavy discharges between charges and/or
overcharging will reduce battery life.
Important!
When the battery is overly discharged and
if the green LED is lit when the charger is plugged in,
this indicates the battery is at a high impedance stage.
In this event, recharge the unit and leave the unit
charging for a period of 24-48 hours before use.
Charging the unit with the mains
charger
Make sure that the jump-starter power switch and the
LED area light are turned off while the unit is being
charged. As charging progresses, the battery status
LED indicators will light one by one.
• Insert the jack of the mains charging adapter into the
dc charging socket on the front of the unit.
• Insert the mains charging adapter plug into a mains
power socket.
• As charging progresses, the battery status LED
indicators will light one by one.
• Charge the unit until the green battery status LED
lights or flashes.
• Continue to charge for one to two more hours.
Note:
The mains charging adapter should not be connected for
more than 60 hours.
• When charging is complete, disconnect the mains
charging adapter and store it in a safe place.
USE
Using the jump-starter
Caution! To reduce the risk of property damage:
• Make sure that the vehicle is in neutral with the
parking brake applied.
• Make sure that the cables are not in the path of
moving belts or the fan.
1. Turn off the vehicle’s ignition and all accessories
before making any connections.
2. Make sure that the jump-starter power switch is
turned off.
3. Check polarity of battery posts. Positive (POS, P,
+) battery post usually has larger diameter than
negative (NEG, N, –) post.
4. Determine which post of the battery is grounded
(connected to the chassis). If negative post is
grounded (as in most vehicles), see 5. If positive
post is grounded, see 6.
5. For negative-grounded vehicle, connect positive
(red) clamp from battery charger to positive
(POS, P, +) ungrounded post of battery. Connect
negative (black) clamp to vehicle chassis or
engine block away from battery. Do not connect
clip to carburetor, fuel lines, or sheet-metal body
parts. Connect to heavy gauge metal part of the
frame or engine block.
6. For positive-grounded vehicle, connect negative
(black) clamp from battery charger to negative
(NEG, N, –) ungrounded post of battery. Connect
positive (red) clamp to vehicle chassis or engine
block away from battery. Do-not connect clip to
carburetor, fuel lines or sheet-metal body parts.
Connect to a heavy gauge metal part of the frame
or engine block.
Important!
If the connections to the battery’s
positive and negative terminals are incorrect, the
Reverse Polarity Indicator will light and the unit
will sound a continuous alarm until the clamps
are disconnected. Disconnect clamps and
reconnect to battery with correct polarity.
7. Turn the jump-starter power switch to the on
position.
8. Start the vehicle and crank the engine in 3 to 6
second bursts.
Important!
If the engine doesn’t start within 6
seconds let the units internal battery cool for 3
minutes before making another attempt.
9. When the vehicle starts, turn the jump-starter off/
on switch to the off position.
10. Leave the vehicle’s engine running.
11. Disconnect the clamp connected to the engine
block or chassis first, followed by the clamp that
is connected to the battery.
Recharge this unit fully after each use.
Caution! To reduce the risk of property damage:
• Vehicles may have electrical and electronic systems
(e.g. engine management systems, mobile phones)
that may be damaged if subjected to high starting
voltages and voltage peaks. Before connecting the
appliance to the vehicle, read the vehicle’s owner’s
manual to confirm that external starting assistance
is allowed.
• If vehicle fails to start, turn off the ignition, turn
off the Jump-Starter Power Switch, disconnect the
jump-start system’s leads and contact a qualified
technician to investigate why the engine did not start.
Using the LED area light
• The LED area light on/off button turns the LED area
light on and off.
• Periodically press the battery power level button to
check battery status.
Make sure the area light is turned off when the unit is
being recharged or stored.
Using the portable compressor
The built-in 12 volt DC compressor is the ultimate
compressor for all vehicle tires, trailer tires and
recreational inflatables. The compressor can operate
long enough to fill up to 3 average sized tires before
the battery must be recharged.
Return the hose to the storage compartment and
recharge this unit fully after each use.
INFLATING TIRES OR PRODUCTS WITH VALVE STEMS
1. Screw the SureFit™ nozzle onto the valve stem.
Do not overtighten.
2. Turn on the compressor power switch.
3. Check pressure with the pressure gauge.
4. When desired pressure is reached, turn off the
compressor power switch.
5. Unscrew and remove the SureFit™ nozzle from
the valve stem.
6. Allow the unit to cool, then recharge before
storing away.
7. Store the compressor hose and SureFit™ nozzle in
the storage compartment.
INFLATING OTHER INFLATABLES WITHOUT
VALVE STEMS
Inflation of other items requires use of the nozzle
adapter.
1. Screw the adapter into the SureFit™ nozzle. Do
not overtighten.
2. Insert the adapter into item to be inflated.
3. Turn on the compressor power switch — inflate
to desired pressure or fullness.
Important!
Small
items such as volleyballs, footballs, etc. inflate
very rapidly. Do not over-inflate.
4. When desired pressure is reached, turn off the
compressor power switch.
5. Disconnect the adapter from the inflated item.
6. Unscrew and remove the adapter from the
SureFit™ nozzle.
7. Allow the unit to cool, then recharge before
storing away.
8. Store the compressor hose, SureFit™ nozzle and
adapter in the storage compartment.
Recharge this unit fully after each use.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Unit will not
charge
• Make sure the power switch is
in the off position.
• Make sure the jack of the
mains charging adapter is
properly connected to both the
unit and a functioning mains
power socket.
Unit fails to
jump-start
• Make sure the jump-starter on/
off switch is in the on position.
• Make sure a proper polarity
cable connection has been
established.
• Check that the unit has a
full charge. Recharge unit if
necessary.
LED Area
Light does
not come
on
• Make sure the LED area light
button is turned on.
• Check that unit has a full
charge. Recharge the unit if
necessary.
Portable
compressor
will not
inflate
• Make sure the compressor
power switch is in the on
position.
• Make sure the nozzle
connector is securely screwed
on to the valve stem when
attempting to inflate tires;
or that the nozzle adapter is
securely screwed into the
SureFit™ nozzle connector and
is inserted properly into the
item to be inflated on all other
inflatables.
