Attaching Cutters and Collars to Spindles
Each size spindle is supplied with a safety lock nut with left hand threads located above the
larger spindle nut. To mount or change cutters, first remove the safety lock nut (A). Remove the
spindle nut (B) by placing one wrench on the spindle nut and another wrench on the flats on top
of the spindle. Always replace the safety lock before operating shaper.
Tool changing must be done with the utmost care keeping in mind the following:
•
Cutters, collars, and spacers mounted on the spindle shaft must have a perfect fit with no
room for movement or play between parts.
•
Holes and counter-bores of cutters, collars, and spacers must be perfectly shaped without
rust, dings, nicks or other flaws.
•
Clean all cutters, collars, and spacers before installing them on the spindle.
•
Always mount the cutter as low as possible on the spindle.
•
Make sure all parts on the spindle are locked in position before starting the shaper.
1. Disconnect the shaper from the power source.
2. Remove the spindle from the machine.
3. Remove both spindle nuts (A and B).
Note:
The lock nut (A) is left turn threads
and the spindle nut (B) is standard turn threads.
4. Decide which collars (C) you will need to use, if
any, and place on the spindle with the cutter
between the collars at the desired/needed height
on the spindle shaft.
Note:
Check and recheck the cutter orientation. Verify that the cutting edge and
the shape will produce the desired results on the desired edge of the material.
5. Add collars as needed to fill out the shaft so that the spindle nut (B) will clamp and hold the
cutter in place.
6. Replace spindle nuts (B and A) and tighten using the spindle wrenches.
7. If using a collet, insert the bit into the collet so that at least half of the shank is engaged in
the collet. The collet will clamp the bit when the draw bar is tightened to hold the collet and
the bit in place.
Note:
Cutters and bits are not included and are customer supplied.
