Release 7/ 8 to Release 9 Differences 

 

now. In previous implementations with the Avidyne EXP5000 
PFD, the autopilot knob on the 55X control head would adjust 
altitude by 20’/click while in ALT mode.  That function is removed 
in Release 9 (S-TEC code AR or later).  The removed function is 
now accomplished by using ALT-VS mode to recapture the target 
altitude if an error develops.  In the Release 9 system, autopilot 
mode will switch from GPSS to NAV on approach. As long as 
there is an active flight plan in the FMS, and the autopilot has 
been initially manually commanded into NAV or GPSS, the FMS 
will automatically switch between the two modes. 

Altitude Alerting 

Release 9 adds an Altitude Alerter indicating the aircraft is 
approaching the Altitude Bug target (from above or below), or, if 
on altitude, the aircraft is deviating from the selected altitude 
target. Turn this user selectable feature on or off via the setup 
pages. 

Integration with PS Engineering Audio Select Panel 

For aircraft equipped with an Avidyne-compatible PS Engineering 
PMA8000B Audio Select Panel, the active radio primary 
frequency will be displayed in a decoded format on the Release 9 
PFD, just below the VSI gauge. Station Identifier (e.g. “Bedford 
Tower”, “Bradley Approach”, etc) and the associated frequency 
are both displayed. 

Timer 

A timer can be optionally selected on the PFD in Release 9. 
Toggle on or off in the SYS-Setup pages. Use the timer for 
several flight purposes, namely holding and instrument approach 
procedures. 

Wind Vector (Winds Calm) 

When computed winds are less than 5 knots, the wind direction 
and speed is displayed as “Winds Calm” in the Release 9 system.
