The time required to run Disk Defragmenter depends on how long it has been since
you last performed this operation, how full your drive is, how powerful your
system unit (CPU) is, and how much random access memory (RAM) your
computer has. Running the Disk Defragmenter utility can take only five or 10
minutes or as long as several hours. Since the time is unpredictable, the first time,
you might want to start the procedure before you leave work or go to bed.
You might see some error messages during Disk Defragmenter run. The most
common message indicates that Disk Defragmenter cannot continue because of
errors on the hard drive. If you receive this message, follow the instructions in the
message and run ScanDisk.
