Part 1 - Introduction
1.1
General
The Model Q46UV is an on-line monitoring system designed for the continuous measurement
UVA (Absorbance) or UVT (Transmittance) in water or wastewater systems. In addition, the
monitor also measures turbidity, providing simultaneous measurement of two important water
quality indicators.
The full scale operating range for UVA measurement is 0-1.3 ABS and for UVT is 0-100% T. The
overall range of the turbidity measurement is 0.2-1000 NTU. Analog outputs for both UV and
turbidity may be scaled for much lower overall ranges depending on application requirements.
Q46UV Monitors are available in two electronic versions, an AC powered monitor with integral
alarm relays and dual 4-20 mA output capability, and a 12-24 VDC unit with dual output and
relays. Options are available to add either a third 4-20 mA output or 3 additional low power SPST
relays.
Low power relays are required for installations using ATI’s automatic chemical cleaning
system. In addition, a digital output option for Profibus, Modbus, or Ethernet is available.
Monitors may also display DOC (Dissolved Organic Carbon) instead of UVA or UVT. A table is
provided in the monitor that converts the UV absorption measurement into equivalent DOC. The
table is based on mixed DOC standards using potassium acid phthalate, which is a common
standard for UVA measurement. Note that this table may be modified by the user for applications
where the UV absorption of the organic carbon may be quite different than the standard.

Standard System
The standard model Q46UV system includes two components, the Q46 analyzer and an optical
sensor with 30 ft. cable. While the sensor may be submerged in tanks or channels, a flowcell is
available for applications requiring higher sensitivity measurements. The flow chamber
eliminates the possibility of interference from external light.
For connection of the sensor to the electronics, a 30' cable is supplied. Up to an additional 100
feet of interconnect cable may be added using #07-0100 junction box.
